Working in City of Maitland

Plumbing in the City of City of Maitland

Maitland has flooded more than once in living memory, and a good plumber here asks how high the water got before touching anything that runs on gas or power.

The City of Maitland had 90,226 residents at the 2021 Census, and 87.3% of its occupied homes were separate houses, so most of our work here is on a house with its own drains, its own hot water and its own yard. Maitland City Council lists 1820, 1893, 1913, 1930, 1949 and 1955 among the city's most significant floods, and the Hunter River flood of February 1955 is the largest recorded in the Hunter Valley. Storms in 2007, 2015 and 2022 flooded parts of the area again. Hunter Water runs the water and sewer network across the city. Where a property has an on-site sewage system instead, council approves it, and an approval to operate usually lasts two to five years before it needs a renewal inspection.

What we do here

Plumbing services around City of Maitland

  • Hot Water Systems

After any flood that reached the laundry or the meter box, a hot water unit stays off until it's been checked. We test it, tell you whether it can be saved, and swap it like for like if it can't.

    Hot Water Systems →
  • Blocked Drains

Once high water drops, silt settles in gully traps and yard pits, and the next shower drains slowly. We jet the lines and run a camera through, so you see they're clean, not just flowing.

    Blocked Drains →
  • Leak Detection

A jump in the water bill with every tap shut usually means a leak you can't see. We track it down before anything gets dug up or cut open.

    Leak Detection →
  • Bathroom Renovations

A written timeline and a fixed price for the plumbing, rough-in to fit-off, so the tiler and the cabinetmaker know when it's their turn.

    Bathroom Renovations →
  • Septic and rainwater tanks

The pipework behind a council application or renewal for an on-site system, and rainwater tanks set up to feed the house, with a pump sized to what the house draws.

  • Gas plumbing

Gas cooktops, heaters and hot water, connected, tested and certified. Smell gas? Get outside first, then ring us.

Questions

Plumbing questions from City of Maitland

Our Maitland home went under in a flood. Can we turn the hot water back on?

Not until it's been checked. The NSW Government's flood clean-up advice says gas appliances that have been in floodwater should be inspected for safety before they're used, and that you shouldn't reconnect gas, power or water yourself. An electric unit needs an electrician too. We check the plumbing and gas side and tell you plainly whether the unit can be saved.

How do we know if floodwater got into our drains?

Slow drains, a gurgle from the toilet when the basin empties, or a smell from the gully trap in the weeks after the water drops are the usual signs. Silt and debris settle in the pipes and pits. We clear them, then run the camera through so you can see the line is open end to end.

Our septic approval in Maitland has expired. What happens now?

Maitland City Council says every on-site system needs an approval to operate, and in most cases those approvals last two to five years. If yours has run out, council has an application for a renewal inspection. If the inspection turns up a fault in the pipes or the pump, we quote the repair and do the plumbing so it passes next time.

Do we need council approval for a rainwater tank in Maitland?

Often not. Maitland City Council says a tank of up to 10,000 litres can go in without approval on R1 General Residential or RU zoned land, as long as it meets the NSW exempt development code. Check your zone on the NSW Planning Portal's spatial viewer first. We plumb the tank in, with the pump and the device that stops tank water flowing back into the mains.

Is one licence enough for plumbing and gas work in NSW?

Yes, when it carries both classes. In NSW, plumbing, draining and gasfitting are classes that sit on the one contractor licence, and a business needs a class for each kind of work it does, so one number shows everything it is licensed for. Ours covers plumbing, drainage and gasfitting (the number on this demo site is a placeholder). NSW Fair Trading lets you check any gasfitter's licence online or on 13 27 00.

Which Maitland suburbs do you cover?

Every suburb in the City of Maitland. East Maitland and Rutherford have their own pages here because they're where we work most, and Thornton, Morpeth and Lorn are on the same daily run. If your street is in the city, it's in our area.
